Practice makes perfect, itulah moto yang sangat cocok jika seseorang ingin terus mengembangkan kemampuan dirinya. Moto ini juga dianut beberapa mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (PBI) Untidar khususnya yang menekuni dunia debat. Kamis hingga Minggu (14-16/4) kemarin 4 mahasiswa PBI mencoba mengasah kemampuannya dengan mengikuti 5th National English Education Debate (NEED) UMY 2017 yang diselenggarakan oleh English Department Students Association Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Kompetisi debat tingkat nasional ini terbuka bagi seluruh mahasiswa prodi bahasa Inggris yang bernaung di perguruan tinggi provinsi Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta dan sekitarnya. Di sinilah tim debat PBI Untidar menemukan pesaing dari beragam universitas ternama di Indonesia, seperti UNS, Univet, UAD, Undip, UNY, Unnes, Unsoed, dll.
Eka Kusuma Adiyaningrum salah satu mahasiswa PBI yang mengikuti kompetisi ini menceritakan pengalaman pertamanya ketika tahun 2015 pernah mengikuti kompetisi debat tingkat universitas namun sempat terhenti karena teman satu timnya jatuh sakit, “Saya rasa ini kesempatan untuk mengulang dan menyelesaikannya hingga akhir, sehingga kemampuan saya kembali terasah.” Pada kompetisi ini Eka menemukan banyak pesaingnya yang sudah berpengalaman sehingga terbangun suasana pro aktif, tentu ini pengalaman menggembirakan baginya. “Bisa dibilang saya newbie jadi rasanya kompitisi debat kemarin challenging banget. Saya dapat banyak ilmu debat yang baru, terutama dari para juri. Bonus lain ya bertambahnya teman dari berbagai universitas.”
Dari 28 tim yang mengikuti kompetisi ini, tim A Untidar yang beranggotakan Yusuf Yulianto dan Novia Indri Susanti berhasil masuk quarter final atau babak perempat final. Mochamad Maliq Al Firdaus, M.Pd. selaku Kaprodi PBI dengan bangga mengapresiasi mahasiswanya. “Setiap waktu saya memang selalu memotivasi mereka, supaya tidak cepat puas hanya menjuarai di tingkat prodi atau universitas saja. Justru kemampuan mereka akan lebih berkembang jika mengikuti kompetisi tingkat nasional, bertemu dengan universitas lain di seluruh Indonesia.” Ditambahkannya, pengiriman mahasiswa untuk mengikuti kompetisi ini melalui tahap seleksi ketat, meskipun hanya di internal prodi. Dirinya ingin benar-benar menyaring mahasiswa yang qualified.
Melalui hasil yang ditorehkan mahasiswa didikannya dalam kompetisi ini, Maliq akan meningkatkan pola pembinaan untuk tahun depan. Harapannya tahun depan bisa lebih baik lagi dibanding sekarang. “Pembinaan selalu dilakukan dan harus ada peningkatan, namun dalam waktu dekat ini fokus pada persiapan NUDC (National University Debating Championship) lebih dulu. Ini merupakan kompetisi debat yang diadakan kopertis tingkat regional Jawa Tengah di bulan Juni,” tandasnya mengakhiri. (TP)

Practice makes perfect, it is a superb idiom for those who want to improve their skill. This idiom is also reflected by students of Department of English Language Education (DELE) at Tidar University who get involve in English Debating Club. On Thursday to Sunday (April 14-16), 4 students improved their debating proficiency by joining 5th National English Education Debate (NEED) UMY 2017. It was hosted by English Department Students Association of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. This national debate competition was opened for all students of Department of English Language Education who involved in the part of universities at Yogyakarta Special Region and its vicinity. In NEED, the debating team of DELE Tidar University met debate competitors from another university in Indonesia, such as UNS, UNIVET UAD, UNDIP, UNY, UNNES, UNSOED, and etc.
Eka Kusuma Adiyaningrum, one of DELE students who joined this competition, shared her first experience when she had ever taken part in debating competition at university level. However, her team could not continue the competition due to one of the members was sick. “I think it is a brilliant chance to join the debating competition, so I can improve my skill.” said Eka. In this great competition, she met many seasoned debaters who gave her an excellent experience. She added “I am newbie in this debating competition and it is so challenging. I get hold of new debate knowledge, especially from the adjudicators. I also make friends from many universities.”
One out of 28 teams which joined this competition, team A of Tidar University that consisted of Yusuf Yulianto and Novia Indri Susanti were successful to go to the quarter final round. Mochamad Maliq Al Firdaus, M.Pd., Coordinator of English Education Study Program, was proud of his students’ achievement, said “I always motivate them to improve their skill not only in the debate competition of study program or university level but also in the national debate competition. He added “The students’ representatives who joined the competition have already passed strict selection in the study program.” He wanted to select his qualified students.
Referring to the students’ triumph in this competition, Maliq is going to improve his debating supervision next year. He hopes the team representative will give better performance in the next debating competition. “Supervising is always done and it should show a great improvement. However, this time, we focus on the preparation for NUDC (National University Debating Championship). This awesome competition is held by KOPERTIS (Private Higher Education Coordinator) in Central Java in June,” he said. (CA)
